Two butterfly events in one meet load the shoulders and the lower back. The individual medley adds another butterfly leg and another breaststroke leg. Combine that with lifetime bests in the 500 freestyle and the 200 butterfly a month earlier, and the six-week load picture is far denser than a one-line commitment post suggests.

The body is a closed system, but data is the key that opens it. The problem for most young swimmers is not that they train too much, but that nobody records how much they trained. A personal-best sheet is not a training-load sheet. This is the lesson Vietnamese swim clubs can take from recruiting letters like this one: we can copy the times, but we cannot copy the load.
From following Florida age-group meets through public data, I have developed one habit: every time I read a results sheet, I ask who recorded that swimmer's metres in the week before the meet. The answer is usually nobody.
