PELUM-Tanzania
(PTz) is a network of Civil Society
Organizations (NGOs) who are working
with Small holder farmers and livestock
keepers on sustainable development in
rural areas of Tanzania. It was founded
in 1995 by five (5) Member Organizations
(MOs) and was officially registered as a
Trust Fund in June, 2002. PELUM-Tanzania
is one of the ten Country Working Groups
(CWGs) of the PELUM Association. Other
CWGs include PELUM Rwanda, Uganda,
Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi,
Lesotho, South Africa and PELUM
Botswana.
An idea of establishing the association
that would advance permaculture and
promote rural development in Africa
started in early 1990s. It reached its
maturity in 1995 when 25 member
organizations met in Nyanga National
Park, Zimbabwe and officially launched
it as PELUM Association which included
ten countries. The association has come
together to facilitate leaning,
networking and advocacy in sustainable
agriculture.
In September 1999 PELUM-Tanzania CWG
held the first Visioning Workshop which
developed the vision, mission, values
and strategic areas for PELUM-Tanzania.
These have been the basis for all PELUM-Tanzania
interventions all the way to 2008.
According to this visioning, PTz had
four strategic objectives: Networking;
Capacity building of member
organizations; Documentation and
Communication; Lobby and advocacy on
land use management and food security;
and Collaboration with members in
facilitating and strengthening farmers’
organizations.
On 6th June 2002 PELUM-Tanzania was
registered under the Ministry of Home
Affairs as a Trust Fund. However, in
2002 the government of United Republic
of Tanzania formulated a
Non-governmental Act which among others
required all NGOs to be registered under
this act and those which were registered
before the act was passed were required
to comply with the Tanzania Non-
Governmental Organization Act, 2002.
Following this compliance requirement,
on 26th February 2008, PELUM –Tanzania
was registered as an NGO by the Vice
President’s Office with registration No.
1978 under NGO Act of 2002.
Currently PELUM-Tanzania is made up of
37 Member Organizations, and
collaborates with many partners. |
